Podcasts
In my time at Imua, I've watched several years of EICs, each with a different vision for what the newspaper should be. For many years videography and broadcast journalism wasn't a priority, due to restricted photo guidelines caused by the pandemic, a lack of coverable events, and an emphasis on redesigning the website or improving the print graphics. To encourage broadcast journalism, I asked a friend experienced in making podcasts to show me how to use Sound Cloud and Anchor to create high-quality podcasts, with sound effects and clear audio. With this knowledge, I collaborated with her and some Imua members interested in podcasts to create two podcasts, one on race and social justice, the other on math. I chose such diverse topics because I wanted to show my staff members the freedom that podcasts allow them to have. In the 4th Quarter I plan on doing a workshop on integrating Otter. AI and Anchor to create podcasts, following that up with an introductory podcast project. With this, students will team up to learn the basics of podcasting by completing a podcast on a topic of their choice related to a newsworthy event that happened in the past week. We'll post a podcast per week on our Imua site, along with increasing our web presence by creating an Imua podcast account on Sound Cloud and
Spotify.

Video Reporting
We’re extremely fortunate to have Yana, an experienced documentary-maker on our staff this year, and because of this we’ve been able to use her talents to produce several documentaries, on athletic accomplishment and surfing competitions. Before this year I had not attempted videography, outside of cooking videos, but after learning of Yana’s talent, I had her teach a mini-lesson on the basics of video editing. It gave her confidence as a first-year staffer, and inspired many students, including myself, to start creating more video content. I created a video to pay homage to those who died in the Ukraine War. I did this by layering two Ukrainian songs of hope over pictures of the Hawaii Stands with Ukraine rally, starting with adult protesters and gradually fading into shots of Ukrainian highschool students who attended the rally. The power of seeing the protesters and hearing clips of their prayers for their loved ones was much more meaningful than an article or a list of statistics.
